Veterans' Civil Service Examination Credits

Veterans receive additional points added to passing civil service exam scores for New York State and local government jobs.

Eligibility: New York resident veterans who served on active duty (other than for training) with an honorable discharge; disabled veterans qualify for larger credits with a VA-certified disability of 10% or more.

Estimated value: Non-disabled: 5 points (open-competitive) / 2.5 points (promotion). Disabled: 10 points (open-competitive) / 5 points (promotion). One-time use.

How to apply: Request veterans' credits when applying for a civil service exam through the NYS Department of Civil Service (or local commission) and submit your DD-214.
